Mohenjo-Daro
Sunday, April 8, 2007
Mohenjo-Daro was one of two intensively excavated sites of the Bronze Age Indus Valley (or Meluha) civilization, and was inhabited between 2500 and 2000 BC. The site name means "Mound of the Dead Men", and it is located in the Sind Valley of Pakistan about 650 kilometers west of Harappa, the other capital of the Meluha civilization. The site includes a large mound with a structure called 'the Great Bath', an open plaza with veranda-covered edifices on all four sides. In the center of the plaza is a large pool (12x7 meters), coated in bitumen and with steps at either end. The city includes an area of perhaps as many 500 hectares, aligned on a grid system, and probably had an occupation of around 200,000.

Excavators associated with Mohenjo-Daro include D. R. Bhandakar, who conducted the first investigations at the site in the 1910s; John Marshall; Mortimer Wheeler; Michael Jansen; and Gregory Possehl.
